Caregiver involvement depends on the child’s age and needs. For younger children, caregivers are usually closely involved. For teens, the clinician balances the young person’s privacy with appropriate caregiver communication, and will talk through expectations early on.
Therapy relies on trust, so what a young person shares is generally kept private within the session. There are important exceptions related to safety. Your clinician will explain how confidentiality works for your child’s age at the start.
The first session focuses on building comfort and understanding what is going on. Depending on age, it may include time with the caregiver, the young person, or both. The goal is for your child to feel safe and heard.

Reluctance is common and okay. Our clinicians are experienced at meeting young people where they are and building trust over time. You do not need your child to be fully on board before reaching out.
